Elon MuskElon Musk may soon start implanting smart chips in the human brain as the billionaire has received approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Musk can now study the effects of the Neuralink device implanted in the human head. “We are excited to share that we have received FDA approval to initiate our first human clinical study,” Neuralink tweeted.

In March, the FDA rejected Neuralink’s bid to implant a chip in the human brain over safety risks. In December last year, Musk claimed that Neuralink’s device was ready for human trials, which he expected to do in about six months after using it on pigs and monkeys.
However, Musk’s Neuralink will not be the first to implant a brain-computer interface in humans. Neuralink rival Synchrony last May began human trials on six severely paralyzed patients in the US to control hands-free digital devices, using just thoughts.
US-based Synchron is an endovascular brain-computer (BCI) interface company that competes with Neuralink, which aims to enable paralyzed people to use computers and phones through their brain activity alone.
