Violence before Panchayat elections in Bengal, clash over submission of form

Several incidents of clashes were reported from different parts of West Bengal on Monday. Unidentified miscreants have attacked BJP’s opposition leaders. In fact, when he was going to file nomination papers for the Panchayat elections, he was attacked by miscreants.

In another incident, BJP MLA Dibakar Gharami was attacked by unidentified people at Sonamukhi in Bankura district when he was on his way to the nomination centre, a senior State Election Commission (SEC) official said.

“Several such incidents of clashes have come to the fore and we have sought details in this regard from district magistrates and superintendents of police,” he said.

Clashes were reported from Daspur (West Medinipur), Kakdwip (South 24 Parganas), Raninagar (Murshidabad), Shaktinagar and Barshul (both in East Bardhaman) and Minakhan (North 24 Parganas), the official said.

The SEC had directed all district magistrates and superintendents of police to enforce prohibitory orders under section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) within one kilometer radius of all enrollment centres. The orders issued on Sunday will be effective till Thursday. Panchayat elections will be held on July 8. The SEC official said that more than 10,000 nomination papers have been filed so far. Meanwhile, the SEC told the Calcutta High Court on Monday that it may extend the last date for filing nomination papers for the panchayat polls by a day to June 16.
